ARTE documentary on the evolution of numbers

ARTE presents L’odyssée des chiffres, a three-part documentary series tracing the remarkable evolution of numbers – from the first prehistoric markings to the algorithms shaping today’s digital world.

In the first episode, Professor Francesco d’Errico and archaeologist Lila Geis, appear to explore the deep roots of numeracy in human prehistory. Their contribution highlights the earliest evidence of counting systems, engraved tools, and the emergence of abstract thought in ancient societies.

While numbers are an everyday part of modern life – used to measure, count, unlock devices or structure information – their origins remain largely unknown to the public. This series offers a compelling journey through time, science, and culture, revealing how these ten seemingly simple symbols became one of humanity’s most powerful tools.

L’odysée des chiffres is available to stream on arte.tv until December 24, 2025.
